My Thoughts on X-Ray:

thequeen117:

X-Ray is so important to me because this season has kept him from being likeable and that is so important.

In the first season, he was an asshole. But a loveable asshole. He played his part as one more cog in this incredible, surreal world where being a superhero is a probable job and a priate can be a successful corparte buisnessman that also wants to take over the world. And while always a bit darker than Vav with his bubbly smiles and good humor, X-Ray seemed to at least enjoy his world along with the viewers.

This season is very different. It really struck me when X-Ray gets annoyed at Flynt Coal for his monologing. He constantly calls him out. Asks the sky why they can’t meet anyone normal and often interupts Coal mid-monologue.And hIs behavior annoyed some of the viewers according to the tumblr posts I saw.

At first, his need to break the fourth wall was humorous. A darker humor that breaks the dimensions of the world, but still funny. Now it was bordering on cruel, constantly reminding the viewers that this was a TV show and the characters we were seeing were freaks, even for their own world. X-Ray stopped the show from being a pure escape by remining the viewers that they were attempting to escape their own reality for a seven minutes at a time.

It didn’t help that he was so against the other characters, especailly Mogar.  X-Ray is a narrative point of view that the show tells us to listen to. We want to believe that there is a world where these characters can exist. But X-Ray reminds us they’re freaks. So while we want to view Mogar and Ash and Coal as fellow heroes, X-Ray is there to tell us that we shouldn’t. X-Ray points out their flaws: Ash’s using of Vav’s crush, Mogar’s obsessiveness and lack of clear moral boundries, Coal’s uselessness. He keeps us from enjoying the world fully. And the we get annoyed.

We don’t want to listen to him. We want to enjoy this world.  So we get annoyed with him. We ask ourselves, why is he there? He seems to only be causing trouble. Why does Vav stick with him? Vav would be better off with Ash and Mogar.

And THEN for the Mad King to spit our words back at us is shocking. It hurts. Because this time, X-Ray can hear them. And we get to see the affect. We get to see how those questions are also plauging X-Ray. We get to see a reason for maybe why he behaves the way he does: fear of abandonment, fear of uselessness, fear of loneliness.

And suddenly, just for a moment, the audience is just as much of a villian as the Mad King.

I like how the Corpirate, a character who started out as a joke in a video for  a WWE game, has managed to become more of a credible threat while accomplishing more in a single episode, than either Cinder Fall or the Grimm, who as a supposed “mastermind” and “bane of mankind” respectively, have in two entire volumes.
