rtx austin 2017 rvb panel highlights
- The 479er arc was supposed to be written (and probably) directed by Kerry he just didn’t have time because he was busy with RWBY
- New show Gen:Lock it’s a mech show. They have a HUGE book with stuff from it.
- Dylan was an intrepid high school journalist and was arrested for breaking into her principals office and releasing faculty reports to the school newspaper
- Joe decided to focus on the effects of the freelancers on sim troopers very early in the process, he was rewatching rvb and his favorite season is season 8 as it’s really “magical” b/c its the moment where the reds and blues step up and are no longer “coward heroes” but “real heroes” and there’s a defining moment and he thought it would be interesting if a group of people decided to do the OPPOSITE of that
- Most difficult character to work with for the directors was Caboose for Miles b/c Caboose has a lot of layers that don’t make sense, Burnie’s is Lopez because he still has to voice Lopez, Joe has the hardest time writing Donut b/c he doesn’t do the entendres as well, Matt loves writing for all of the characters b/c they’re so fun to define.
- For the two machinimators, Kyle and Josh hate when all of the characters are in one room and talking, or when a character has a wide visor. Josh hates machinimating Doc as “O’Malley”.
- Frank, the DM from Heroes & Halfwits was a big inspiration for RvB as he was horrible at Halo and Burnie would just scream at him nonstop.
- Some of the sound effects we hear are from Halo and some are from outside of it.
- They went around in Halo 4 and had to record different sounds because of how good the sound in Halo 4 was and how they “thought of everything”
- In terms of retroactively messing something up, Burnie says that writers cannot say a date, or an amount of time, or any form of number without a reason for it b/c if you say it then it locks in things that you don’t need to. Miles says not accidentally making plot holes is hard.
- There were a few things Joe couldn’t do this season because they’re in Lazer Team 2 or RWBY Volume Five.
- For RvB14 they looked at a bunch of their friends that they had and essentially, as Miles said, “Hey you up?”. It was a lot of people they wanted to work with but had never had a chance to before.
- Miles said that Joe “gets it” in terms of the characters, and didn’t need as much help as other writers that season did.
- There was a horror episode that Gray was going to do for RvB14.
- More “you used up all the resources on the Mercs” jokes
- Kyle was going to do backstory for York in between when he left Freelancer and when Wash finds him, there were no resources for it.
- Miles wants to do another anthology season
- Joe’s inspiration for so many references this season is because for him red vs blue and being a “film school idiot” were tied together, and knew that Dylan would need an idiot sidekick (paraphrasing) so who better than a film school idiot? He also likes movies that use other movies for their humor, so he wanted to do it in RvB.
- There was a joke line along the lines of “Hi my name is Cronut I’ve never seen a movie I play video games and only watch anime, also my real name is Miles Luna!” to make fun of Miles not understanding Joe’s references. Miles did record it, but it won’t make the final cut
- They started using animation to differentiate the web show from their planned TV show back around s6 (?). They started incorporating it into the web show because people couldn’t differentiate between what was RvB and what wasn’t because of how easy it was to replicate.
- Joe knew that a lot of the fans wouldn’t believe or trust Temple, so he knew it wasn’t going to be that big of a surprise and knew he didn’t need it to be that big of a surprise.
- Some of the knock off names came from knock off names the OG crew used to have, only Surge I think.
- Kirk Johnson voices Loco
- Miles was proud to hand RvB over to Joe as he enjoys watching him grow
- Miles wrote Carolina and York’s backstory in the Freelancer arc, and since it got good response they knew he would be good for taking over RvB.
- The bechdel test joke was actually criticism from Burnie during a table read that made it’s way into the episode w/ Sister
- Joe loves writing Dylan and how serious she is in an absurd world, Temple also because he’s a very aware character and embraces how evil he is.
- Temple gets a bit more exaggerated at the end of the season, is a big fan of mixed metaphors and Shakespearean dialogue. Joe loves writing him over the top.
- Burnie likes the gaps and going in and filling them in.
- Going back to s9 and remaking it from the perspective of Carolina finding the Reds and Blues is “interesting” but there are no plans for it.
- One of the purposes of season nine was how Church solves problems and how it just goes “again and again and again”
- The episode w/ Carolina and Church in season 12 after they find the Reds and Blues was written by Burnie
- Burnie regrets killing off South and thinks she could have been a greater, longer term villain.
- Miles regrets killing off the Counselor and wished he had done more with him.
- Joe didn’t talk about killing characters cause he doesn’t want to spoil anything.
- Miles wishes he had handled Carolina’s injury differently. “Carolina getting stabbed in the leg just sucks”
- Carolina’s arc in 13 was better in Miles’ eyes because of the balance out between her being too reliant on her superpowers.
- Joe regrets not having Donut throw the firecracker in the Brick Gulch episodes.
- Burnie regrets cutting the original characters’ backgrounds that were supposed to be shown in the background of RvB9, for example Grif was supposed to be the driver of the car they attacked.
- The silent blue freelancer who doesn’t say anything was supposed to be Sarge, but they decided to make him Florida instead. He was supposed to get a new red helmet at the end of s9, and it was supposed to be that he didn’t talk b/c his helmet didn’t work.
- Joe really pushes the VA’s and Matt feels like this season is the best in terms of his performance
